In this section of the website, I have created a few pages that are really "just for fun." Now that I've shared some of my academic research and coursework with you, I thought it might be swell to share some other snippets about myself that aren't necessarily academic as well as some of the people and words that inspire me. Utilize the pulldown menu to explore more.
Photography:
Taking photographs offers my creativity an artistic space. I have an eye for detail, but am not very artistic when it comes to drawing! So instead, I've grown quite fond of attempting to complement the "realness" of the medium with the feeling of that exact moment in photographs I take. I want my pictures to tell stories, to radiate the hint of a memory.
Some of these photographs are from around the valley and mountains where I live, from my travels, and some are senior portraits I've taken... all to capture unique perspectives, tidbits of culture, and personalities of people....to appreciate the power a single moment contains. My camera lens often offers insights to how I view the world. I seek to find beauty in all its manifestations and consider my photos a form of artistic rhetoric.
Quilting:
In my free time, I enjoy creating patchwork quilts. Sometimes I use store-bought fabric, but I do try to integrate up-cycled fabric, particularly in my crazy quilts. My family has a rich history in quilt-making, but my great grandmother died before she could teach me. Gradually, I taught myself how to stitch in an effort to stretch my creativity back to my roots. Each quilt is hand-sewn: no sewing machine! Many of my quilts have stories behind the colors or designs I create, and as I continue to make them, I continue to learn "tricks of the trade." After graduation, I hope to complete all the quilts I'm still in the process of finishing.
